Outdated wireless bridging devices alert
Grid view shows this alert when some wireless devices on your site are running firmware that is too old to bridge safely:
X out of Y devices on your site are outdated and may have their bridging disabled by the control system. Please upgrade the firmware of your device to re-enable bridging. View affected devices
This article explains what the alert means, which products it covers and how to fix it.
What is bridging?
Wireless zencontrol devices don't all talk to the control system directly. Many of them pass messages on for their neighbours, so a switch or sensor at the far end of a floor can still reach the control system through the devices between them. This is called bridging, and it is what lets a wireless network cover a whole building.
Why is bridging disabled?
Older firmware on some Gen 2 wireless products has a fault in how it forwards messages. The control system turns off bridging on devices running these versions. The device itself keeps working, but it no longer passes on messages for other devices. Devices that were relying on it to reach the control system may need a longer route or may lose contact entirely.
Newer firmware fixes the fault. After the upgrade, the control system turns bridging back on.
Affected products
A device is affected if its firmware version is at or below the version in this table.
| Product | Affected versions |
|---|---|
| IoT Bridge Gen 2 | 5.10.1 and earlier |
| Smart Switch 6 Button Gen 2 | 5.13.3 and earlier |
| IoT PWM Dimmer Gen 2 | 5.20.0 and earlier |
| IoT Sensor Gen 2 | 5.16.0 and earlier |
| IoT Sensor Uw Gen 2 | 5.3.2 and earlier |
Before you start: enable device upgrade preferences
The View affected devices link only works when Device upgrade preferences is enabled. Without it, grid view doesn't load firmware release information, so it can't tell which devices are outdated. The link will open an empty list even though the alert is showing.
The same setting is needed to upgrade device firmware from the cloud.
- Open the site and go to Site settings.
- Turn on Device upgrade preferences.
- Set an Upgrade period. This is the time of day when device upgrades are allowed to start, and it must be at least 2 hours long. Note that these will not upgrade automatically.
- Save the site settings.
For more detail on these settings, see How to upgrade device firmware in the cloud.
Find the affected devices
- Open grid view for the site.
- In the alert, click View affected devices.
Grid view switches to the Device location tab and applies the Outdated bridge devices filter. The list shows the affected products whose firmware version is tagged Outdated.
Upgrade the firmware
- In the filtered list, select the devices you want to upgrade.
- Right-click and choose Upgrade firmware.
- Upgrades start during the upgrade period set in site settings.
Once a device is on a fixed version, the control system turns bridging back on, and the device no longer co every affected device is upgraded, the alert goes away.
Upgrades can take a while on wireless devices, especially on large sites. If you upgrade many devices at once, use the Staggered option in device upgrade preferences to limit how many upgrade at the same time on each control system.
Still seeing the alert?
If the alert remains after the upgrades should have finished, check that:
- the devices are online and reachable by the control system
- the upgrade period has passed since you started the upgrade
- device upgrade preferences haven't expired or been turned off
If none of these explain it, contact support@zencontrol.com with the site name and the affected devices.
