Requirements
The only requirement for being able to upgrade your device firmware in the cloud is to have the Device upgrade preferences enabled in your Site settings.
You can set it to All day to have them upgrade at any time but ideally you'll want to upgrade them during a time when the devices won't affect anyone, such as overnight. After that is done, you're good to go!
When to upgrade device firmware
If you are experiencing any issues on your devices, then you should try updating them if there is an update available as this might fix whatever issue you might be seeing. It's also just good to keep your devices up to date so upgrading them when they are not in use by anyone is also a good idea.
How to upgrade device firmware
Your devices should upgrade automatically based on your upgrade settings, but you can also start upgrades from the cloud. To do so, first head to the Device view in grid view.
Is this view not appearing for you? This could be because you have not enabled the device upgrade preferences in the site settings as mentioned above.
This view gives you some basic device information, but more importantly displays all of the versions for each device and the version it is trying to upgrade to if possible along with the status of the upgrade.
Is your thread device on your control system but not appearing in this view? See the Advanced wireless bootloading section below!
From a brief view, you can see which devices require upgrading. The Tag column will detail the current version tag that is on the device. If this column says Outdated then that means it can be upgraded! If you right-click on the single device and look at the Upgrade firmware sub menu, you should see what versions are available for the device under what tags.
You can also highlight multiple rows, but if the devices are different products and have different versions, you won't be able to see what version numbers you are upgrading to until you click a tag.
Clicking a firmware tag to upgrade to won't do it straight away, it will show you a summary screen that details what version each device will upgrade to. It will also lock the confirmation for 10 seconds so that you can make sure it all looks correct. Make sure you know what you are doing when you upgrade devices as it can lock out the device from receiving commands for a while.
It will not try and upgrade any devices that are already at the version you are trying to upgrade to. When you are happy with the summary, click the Upgrade button and this will start the process. It can take a fair bit of time to complete but you can check on the progress in this view.
Advanced wireless bootloading
If your thread device does not appear in the cloud but is connect to the control system, it should appear in the Advanced bootloading tab in grid view under the Wireless perspective. This will list all of the thread devices that each control system knows about, even if they are already shown on the standard device upgrade page.
Similar to the other upgrade page, you can see the current version for the device and the current state of any running upgrades for the device.
If a control system has no thread devices, it will appear in this view without a serial and most of the information as blank or N/A. If there is an issue with contacting the gateway to query the thread devices, it will appear similar to that but with a red outline with the error message displayed when hovered over.
There is a limit on how many advanced bootloads can be started for a control system. It is limited to a single product type on each control system. That means you can bootload multiple PIR sensors at once, but they must be the same product. If you try and upgrade multiple products, you will receive a popup that asks you to just pick one product to upgrade.
If for some reason we can't read the Flash start for the device, we will also ask to input a fallback flash start so that if we try and upgrade the firmware and can't determine one, we will use the one provided in the dialog.
After everything is resolved, you will see a summary screen, similar to standard upgrading, that will tell you what versions the devices will be going to and will ask you to confirm it.
