In a DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) setup, the concepts of a Device and a Device Location are fundamental but distinct. Understanding their roles is crucial for planning, commissioning, and maintaining a modern, flexible lighting system.
Device Location: The Digital Placeholder
A Device Location is essentially a label or a digital placeholder representing a physical spot where a lighting fixture (or other DALI control gear) is intended to be placed.
Pre-commissioning: Device locations are typically pre-commissioned and placed onto a digital floor plan or design schematic before any physical devices are installed or connected.
Information Stored: It primarily holds contextual data about the location, not the hardware itself. This includes:
A descriptive label (e.g., "Meeting Room 1 Ceiling Spot A").
Location data such as the floor, wing, room number, or coordinates relative to the floor plan.
Stability: A device location represents a static point in the building's architecture. While they can be moved or redefined in cases of a renovation or redesign, they typically do not move and are considered the fixed digital address.
Purpose: It acts as a static "address" in the building's digital twin, aiding in the planning and management of the lighting system.
Device: The Physical Hardware
A Device represents the physical hardware (like an LED driver, ballast, or sensor) that is actually installed and connected to the DALI controller (either wirelessly or via the DALI line).
Physical Connection: It is the tangible hardware component that communicates with the control system.
Information Stored: The device stores technical information specific to the hardware and its operation. This often includes:
Hardware and firmware version details.
Manufacturer and product model information.
Operational status and fault reporting data.
Purpose: The device is what actually executes the lighting commands (dimming, switching) and reports its status back to the controller.
| Feature | Device Location | Device |
|---|---|---|
| Nature | Logical/Contextual label | Physical hardware component |
| When Created | Pre-installation, planning stage | When physically installed |
| Key Data | Label, floor, map/plan location | Hardware/firmware version, product |
| Flexibility | Static (though reconfigurable) | Dynamic (can be swapped) |
A Device can be assigned to a Device Location. This links the technical hardware data to the location context. Devices can also be unassigned from a Device Location and a different Device assigned to allow for replacement of the hardware
